Most students either begin in their career or go on to graduate studies.  This depends on your goal and the degree type needed for your intended career.  One great option is to stay connected with your college so that you can work with alumni groups, hear about opportunities available through the school, and network with other graduates.

There are a few areas to look for job opportunities:

  1. Career Services: meet with your career services team at your school.  They can help with resume development, job interview skills, and career fairs.
  2. Network: talk with your network about your goals and what opportunities you are looking for.  This can lead to recommendations and referrals for opportunities.
  3. Internship opportunities: there may be opportunities to work in your internship location or these mentors can provide recommendations for your job applications.
  4. Volunteer opportunities: this can expand your network or knowledge about specific areas within your field.  It can lead to a specialization in your field.
  5. Professors: faculty members often get notifications about job opportunities.  By letting your professors know of what opportunities you are looking for, they can provide insights to open jobs.

There are some similarities between work and school.  There is a schedule to follow and tasks to accomplish.  However, one major difference is no homework.  Some key tips to help with this transition include:

  • Develop your schedule
  • Find mentors
  • Continue learning
  • Keep an open mind to opportunities
  • Update your resume regularly
  • Take breaks
