6 Strategies for college

Books in a library

Get to know your campus

Take a campus tour to find out where you will be taking classes and where key offices are such as advising and faculty offices.  Also, check out resources like the library and student services.

Review majors offered

Check out the listing of majors offered at the college.  Also, review the type of degree offered for this major such as a certificate, associate's, master's, or doctorate degree.  In your research, review options for a double major, internship opportunities, and advanced degrees.

Meet your faculty

Get to know your professors and the projects they work on.  It may lead to opportunities to work with them or guidance on your major.  In addition, if the faculty member teaches in your major, you will likely take multiple courses with them.  Building a relationship with faculty can be beneficial throughout your college journey.

Meet with your advisor

Make sure to meet with your academic advisor at least once a semester.  In this meeting review your degree progress, what courses are offered next semester, and which faculty are teaching the class.  Let your advisor know your professional goals so that you can take classes aligned with those goals.

Check out the class schedule

Review when classes are offered including what days and times.  This review can help plan your schedule for upcoming semesters that align with your personal, professional, and academic schedule.  By being proactive with your schedule, it will help with time management and balancing everything during the semester.

Review class options

Examine all of the options for classes including in person, online, hybrid, and asynchronous (live online).  It is important to review all formats, choose which format works best for your learning needs, and fits your schedule.  In addition, consider which faculty are teaching the class.
