There are a few types of college degrees.   They include:

  1. Certificates: typically a year or two of study and are focused on a specific job skill set.
  2. Associate degree: typically two years of study in a specific area.  This degree can lead to ongoing study towards a bachelors degree.
  3. Bachelors degree: typically four years of study in a specific field.  After this degree, there are options for graduate school.
  4. Graduate degree: advanced degrees of study after completing a bachelors degree.  These programs can be a few years of study depending on the requirements of the field.

This is a general overview of the types of degrees, please review your colleges programs for specific requirements

Colleges should align with your expectations.  This includes where you would like to be (location), what you would like to study (degree programs offered), class size, and the focus of the faculty (research or teaching).

It is good to have an idea of what you want to study.  You do not have to know your specific major to apply or begin college but it is good to know the area you are interested in.  This is to make sure the program is offered at the school.  It is also good to review majors when you begin at the college to see what options are available.
